Apartments for Rent in Bangkok

Apartments for rent in Bangkok, Thailand, cover a wide range of features and budgets, but our focus is mainly in the central business district along Sukhumvit, Ploenchit, Silom and Sathorn, though we also cover other areas such as Aree, Phahonyothin, and Bang Na, Samut Prakarn, among others.

The difference between an apartment and a condominium is that one owner will own an entire building of apartments which are all rental units, whereas condominium units are individually owned whereby many of your neighbors will own their unit while others will rent them out as an investment property.

Apartments have advantages over condominiums for rent as follows:

  • If the furniture doesn't all suit your tastes, you can move furniture between units.
  • If you are bringing furniture, apartment buildings are more flexible about moving things in and out, and have their own storage.
  • Better support staff on average, though it varies from building to building
  • You run less risk of getting a bad landlord, since things are more standardized

Disadvantages of apartments are:

  • Rental prices are hard to negotiate. They are standard, and the buildings do not like to lower rent because if word gets around, other tenants paying more get disgruntled and everyone wants lower rent. With condos, anything is negotiable.
  • Condo owners can be more flexible in lease terms and conditions.

For community, if you like to live in a place with established Thailand residents, then a condominium building provides that. However, if you like to socialize with other temporary expats who may be in the same situation as yourself, then renting an apartment would better suit you.

Renting an apartment in Bangkok, compared to renting a standalone house, gives you more opportunities to socialize with other expats in Thailand.

The most popular area for renting in the Sukhumvit Road region along the skytrain line. The upper end of this region for luxury units is Sukhumvit soi 63 aka Ekamai. A popular area is Sukhumvit soi 55 aka Thonglor. The main expat region is between sois 23 and 63 (our "Zone C"). The touristy area is between sois 1 and 21 (our "Zone B", but many expats like that region for living as well, though finding buildings in quiet areas requires local knowledge.

The Silom and Sathorn region (our "Zone E") are popular with expats working in that region, being that it's an older and much more business dominated area.

The Ploenchit / Lang Suan / Rajdamri region in-between (our "Zone A") is a unique area in the center, dominated by apartment and condominium buildings plus some office buildings, with nearby access to top shopping conveniences as well as access to the two skytrain lines and one subway track, and almost no houses.

Going northwest up the skytrain line, the environment changes to almost purely Thai neighborhoods with few expat style conveniences. We call this region "Zone V".

You can read more on the ThailandGuru.com guide about living and working in Thailand, which includes popular expat regions for finding Bangkok apartments for rent, both suburban and central, and particularly where we define the central Bangkok zones A, B, C, D, E, and V.
